SOUND

  • BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY John Casali, Tim Cavagin, Nina Hartstone, Paul Massey, John Warhurst
  • FIRST MAN Mary H. Ellis, Mildred Iatrou Morgan, Ai-Ling Lee, Frank A. Montaño, Jon Taylor
  • MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT Gilbert Lake, James H. Mather, Chris Munro, Mike Prestwood Smith
  • A QUIET PLACE Erik Aadahl, Michael Barosky, Brandon Proctor, Ethan Van der Ryn
  • A STAR IS BORN Steve Morrow, Alan Robert Murray, Jason Ruder, Tom Ozanich, Dean Zupancic

Our Winner:

  • First Man (Ellis, Morgan, Lee, Montano, Taylor) – In a film who’s big ticket scenes are often ultra close up and personal it it necessary for the sound to tell its own story. First Man sounds as great as it looks and makes it completely unnecessary for gratuitous rocket shots, giving the director far more freedom to focus on the man and not the event.

The BAFTA Winner

  • Bohemian Rhapsody

A Quiet Place 2018 A family must live in silence as not to awaken the beast in the woods. Despite a barrel full of plot holes, the tense nature of the film and lack of dialogue keeps you on edge throughout. Gordon 6
A Star is Born 2018 A worthy remake that grew on me as it went. Both lead roles were played very well and the songs were good, but I didn't buy some of the emotional bits and the British manager was just awful. Gordon 7
Bohemian Rhapsody 2018 The acting is atrocious, the story so cleansed it isn't really a biopic at all and the cinematography gives everything a TV movie colourised glow that makes everything look staged. But for all that I still found myself enjoying the cheesiness of it all. Gordon 6
First Man 2018 A wonderful biopic that is clearly about the man and not the mission. Don't expect lots of glory shots of rockets or planets, just a man and his single minded ambition. Gordon 9
Mission: Impossible - Fallout 2018 The most exciting MI film and Tom Cruise's best for quite some time. Enough twists, chases and fist fights to keep the hungriest action fan quiet. Gordon 8
